Ventnor

Ventnor covers the southern tip of the island and incorporates the villages of St. Lawrence, Whitwell, Niton and Chale. For years Ventnor has been the center of the isle of wights tourist trade. The British peoples love affair with Ventnor first began in the Victorian era and was largely due to physician Sir James Clarke, who in 1830 discovered it had an extraordinary microclimate which he said was ideal for Ventnor Sea Frontthe treatment of pulmonary disease. During this time tuberculosis was rife and sufferers came from all over the country to be treated at the Royal National Hospital for Diseases of the Chest, which stood on the site now occupied by Ventnor Botanic Gardens. Its no suprise Ventnor has adopted Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health as its figurehead reflecting the health giving properties of Ventnor and its microclimate. Nowdays people still flock to enjoy the fantastic weather and amazing views of the English Channel.
